Passengers face more delays as volcanic ash returns to UK airspace

Heathrow, Gatwick and London City airports have today resumed a limited service after being forced to ground flights over the weekend due to the return of volcanic ash to UK airspace.

Airports in Northern Ireland, Ronaldsway, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and Northern Scotland will be shut until at least 1300 today, according to the UK’s air traffic control service NATs. Cardiff, Swansea, Bristol and Farnborough are also included in the no-fly zone.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports on the other hand opened again for business at 7:00 this morning, but some restrictions still apply due to their close proximity to the no-fly zone. This particularly affects Gatwick inbound flights.

Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds Bradford airports have also re-opened after suspending flights on Sunday, as have midland airports Birmingham, Norwich and East Midlands.

Meanwhile in The Republic of Ireland, Dublin airport is scheduled to re-open at 12:00 today, Donegal airport at 14:00 and Sligo airport at 10:00, according to the Irish Aviation Authority. All other airports are open until further notice.

Passengers due to fly from affected airports are being urged by authorities to check with their airline before travelling to the airport. You can find out more about your rights if your flights are cancelled here.

The news comes just two days after Italy’s civil aviation authority fined the Irish airline Ryanair 3 million euros for failing to provide passengers stranded by the Icelandic volcanic ash with the proper care as set out by European legislation.

Meanwhile, British Airways cabin crew are preparing to strike tomorrow in the first of a series of four separate five-day strikes over pay and working conditions.
